You may also try starting the livecd with the noapic option 

livecd noapic

It helped me solve a problem when I was constantly getting kernel logger
message - Disabling IRQ #11
and my NIC was not working properly.

Once I rebooted with noapic, all worked fine. The procedure below for
effecting persistence also works in my case where I am using it for
assigning a static ip.
